What is osteopathic manual therapy?

Osteopathy is the foundation from which all other modern-day manual therapy professions were built, including physiotherapy, massage therapy, and chiropractic. Osteopathy bridges the gap between all these professions. In osteopathy, there is consideration for your entire body from your pelvis up to your head and down to your feet.

Osteopathic manual practitioners are trained to understand that there is a relationship between the bones that support your body and the tissue that envelopes it, including your muscles, ligaments, lymph, organs, nerves, and blood vessels. Our human bodies are made to move, and restriction of motion anywhere in the body has a negative impact on our overall health.

Osteopathic treatment helps to balance the various systems of the body by removing hindrances and restoring motion to alleviate pain, increase mobility, and stimulate the body's ability to heal itself. It is based on the understanding that when one part doesn't work well, the others must work harder.

Who can benefit from osteopathy?

Each treatment is tailored to the needs of the individual; it is great for the whole family. Everyone from toddlers to the elderly, sports enthusiasts, professional athletes, people with sedentary jobs, people with physical jobs, and people with chronic and acute conditions can benefit from osteopathic manual therapy.

What does a visit with an osteopathic manual practitioner look like?

Your session with an osteopathic manual practitioner consists of a full-body assessment from head to toe, not just the area of complaint. One of the main philosophies of osteopathy is that the body functions as a unit and you cannot separate any part from the whole. Therefore, all the interconnected relationships are assessed to find the root cause of your complaint. Then, the appropriate hands-on techniques will be utilized to address the problem.

Various soft tissue techniques, gentle joint mobilizations, and articulations where your joints are moved through their natural range of motion are applied to reduce pain, improve movement, and encourage blood flow. Sessions are often between 30 and 60 minutes in length.

Osteopathy is a gentle, non-invasive form of manual therapy. It is often not painful, although it's not uncommon to feel a little sore or stiff in the following days after a treatment, particularly if you're having treatment for a painful or inflamed area of injury.
